Selling a Large Coin Collection? We Buy It All, and Know Where Every Piece Belongs

If you’ve spent years, or a lifetime, building a serious collection, or you’ve inherited one, you already know it’s worth a lot. The hard part is selling it without leaving money on the table. A big collection rarely fits one buyer. It may hold early American gold next to Roman silver, world crowns, merchant tokens and a stack of bullion. American Rarities has been helping owners sell collections like that since 1990. We take the whole collection, and we know where each part of it sells best.

Will you buy everything, or just the best pieces?

Everything. We don’t cherry-pick. Some buyers take the few headline coins and leave you with boxes of “the rest,” which is often the hardest part to sell. We make an offer on the entire collection: the rarities, the common date coins, the albums, the rolls and the bullion. The collection doesn’t need to be sorted or organized first. We examine every coin, album and set as we find it.

My collection mixes rare U.S. coins, ancient and world coins, tokens and bullion. Who handles all of that?

We do. Most large collections cross more than one category, and that’s where many buyers fall short. Our network includes specialists in every area we buy:

  • Rare American coins, from early copper and silver to classic gold
  • Ancient Greek and Roman coins
  • World coins from every era
  • Tokens and medals
  • Gold and silver bullion

Each part of your collection is valued by someone who knows that market, instead of being priced by someone who only knows one corner of the hobby.

Where do my coins end up?

With the buyers who value them most. Over more than three decades, we’ve built relationships with dealers, private collectors and auction houses across the country and abroad. A run of Morgan dollars may suit one specialist dealer. A rare variety may be exactly what a particular collector has been looking for. An exceptional rarity may belong in front of national or international bidders. Knowing where each piece belongs is what lets us make a strong offer on the whole collection.

Should my collection go to auction?

Sometimes it should, and we’ll tell you honestly. For truly important coins or a collection with a strong story, a major public auction can be the right stage. We have brought collections to Stack’s Bowers, a leading auction house we’re proud to count as a friend and partner. Auction isn’t the best fit for every collection, though. It can mean commissions, long waits for payment and uncertain results. For many owners, a strong written offer for the whole collection is simpler and faster. We’ll go through your options with you so you can choose what fits your goals.

How does the appraisal work?

It’s free, and there’s no obligation.

  1. Tell us what you have. Send an inventory list (partial lists are fine) or photos of your coins. Attach them to the form at americanrarities.com, text them to 720-600-4740, or email them to staff@americanrarities.com.
  2. We review it. An experienced buyer looks over your material and follows up with any questions.
  3. You get a written appraisal and offer. For large collections, one of our appraisers can usually meet you in person at your home or business. We have appraisers in every state. You can also use our fully insured mail-in service at our expense.
  4. You decide. If you accept, payment is prompt. If you don’t, you owe nothing.
