Half dollars are one of the most commonly collected coins in the United States. While most you find in circulation are worth only their face value, certain dates and types can be worth significantly more.
Have you found an old 50-cent piece? This simple guide will help you identify which half dollars are valuable and what to look for in your collection.
## 1. Silver is the First Thing to Look For
The easiest way to identify a valuable half dollar is to check its date. This will tell you if the coin is made of silver.
- 1964 and Earlier: All half dollars minted in 1964 or before are 90% silver. This includes Franklin Half Dollars and Walking Liberty Half Dollars. These coins are always worth much more than 50 cents, based on the current price of silver.
- 1965 to 1970: Kennedy Half Dollars from these years are 40% silver. While not as valuable as the 90% silver coins, they are still worth more than face value and are highly collectible.
- 1971 to Today: With very few exceptions (special proof sets), half dollars minted after 1970 are made of copper and nickel and are not silver.
Rule of Thumb: If your half dollar is dated 1970 or earlier, you have found a coin worth more than 50 cents.
## 2. Check for Key Dates and Mint Marks
Beyond their silver content, some half dollars have extra value for collectors due to their rarity. Look for these specific “key dates”:
- Walking Liberty Half Dollars (1916-1947): This series contains many rare dates, especially from the early years like 1916-S, 1921, and 1921-D.
- Franklin Half Dollars (1948-1963): While most are valued for their silver, some dates like the 1949-S and 1955 are more valuable to collectors.
- Kennedy Half Dollars (1964-Today): The 1964 is 90% silver. The 1970-D is a key date as it was only issued in mint sets and is very scarce.
## 3. Why Professional Grading Matters
The condition, or “grade,” of your coin is the biggest factor in its final value. A common-date silver half dollar might be worth $10, but the same coin in perfect, uncirculated condition could be worth hundreds.
It is impossible to determine a coin’s true grade without years of experience. This is why a professional appraisal is so important.
