1876 Empire City Mine gold token from Colorado

Colorado is home to American Rarities, and to a remarkable money story. The 1858–59 Pikes Peak gold rush brought Clark, Gruber & Co., whose Denver private mint struck gold coins in 1860 and 1861. The federal government bought that mint in 1863, and the Denver Mint began striking coins in 1906. Leadville, Creede and Cripple Creek added silver and gold fortunes. Our team has bought coins and paper money since 1990, with over $400 million purchased.

Whether you have a family collection, an inheritance with early Denver Mint coins or mining-town tokens, or precious metals to sell, send us a list or clear photos for a free, no-obligation appraisal. Most offers come within 24 hours, though some can take upwards of a week or more depending on the collection.

Colorado Numismatic History: What We Look For

Colorado’s history is tied to gold, silver and the Denver Mint, and it left a rich numismatic heritage:

The Colorado Gold and Silver Rushes

The 1858–59 Pikes Peak gold rush founded Denver, and strikes at Central City and Black Hawk soon followed. Leadville's silver boom began in the late 1870s, Creede boomed in the early 1890s, and Cripple Creek became one of the richest gold camps in the country. Gold and silver specimens, early coins and camp tokens from these years still turn up in Colorado families.

The Denver Mint

The federal government bought the Clark, Gruber & Co. mint in 1863 and ran it as an assay office for decades. The Denver Mint struck its first coins in 1906, and today it produces billions of circulating coins a year with the "D" mint mark, along with commemorative and collector coins. It also stores silver and gold reserves. Many Colorado collectors focus on coins struck in their home state.

Colorado Pioneer Gold, Scrip and Bank Notes

Before the Denver Mint, Clark, Gruber & Co., John Parsons & Co. and J.J. Conway & Co. struck private gold coins from Colorado gold in 1860 and 1861. Territorial and early statehood Colorado also saw private scrip and national bank notes from local banks, now collectible pieces of the state's economic past.

Significant Colorado Coin Finds, Including Denver Mint Errors

Colorado collections often hold well-preserved "D" mint coins, and Denver Mint error coins such as off-metal strikes, doubled dies and missing clad layers are highly prized. Old mining camps and homesteads also give up tokens and coins to metal detectorists and renovators.
