New York Numismatic History: Colonial Money, Wall Street and the West Point Mint
New York has been a center of trade, banking and industry since colonial days, which gives it one of the richest money histories in the country:
From Dutch New Amsterdam to British rule and early statehood, New Yorkers used Dutch coins, British money, Spanish silver dollars and their own colonial paper money. New York colonial notes are an important part of early American finance and are popular with collectors.
The West Point Mint in New York became an official branch mint in 1988. It mainly strikes gold, silver and platinum bullion and collector coins such as American Eagles and commemoratives, and it also struck the 2019 and 2020 "W" quarters released into circulation. Its "W" mint mark is popular with collectors.
During the National Banking Era (1863–1935), hundreds of banks across New York State issued notes printed with their own names, from New York City to small upstate towns. Their variety makes New York notes a favorite with paper money collectors.
New York City has been a financial center since colonial times. Wall Street, the port and the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, kept U.S. and foreign coins and currency moving through the state.
New York's canals, railroads and factories issued their own tokens and scrip, and merchants struck tokens and store cards. These pieces are now collectible parts of the state's economic history.
New York collectors share their interest through clubs across the state, regional coin shows and the American Numismatic Society in New York City.
