Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), founded in 1987 and based in Sarasota, Florida, is one of the world’s leading third-party coin grading services. For collectors and dealers, an NGC grade provides two crucial things:
Authentication: NGC verifies that a coin is genuine.
Grading: NGC assigns a numerical grade (from 1 to 70) that describes the coin’s physical condition.
This information is displayed on a tamper-evident holder, often called a “slab.” An NGC certification removes guesswork and allows buyers and sellers to establish a coin’s fair market value.

NGC Grades and What They Mean for Value
NGC grades coins on the 1 to 70 Sheldon scale. Each grade has a two-letter prefix. MS (Mint State, 60 to 70) is for coins struck for circulation that show no wear, and PF is for Proof coins struck for collectors. - Plus (+): a coin at the high end of its grade, close to the next grade up. NGC can assign it to coins from XF 45 to MS 68 or PF 68.
- Star (★): a coin with exceptional eye appeal for its grade, such as vivid toning or strong luster.
- Details grades: coins with problems such as cleaning or damage get a Details grade (for example, “AU Details, Cleaned”) instead of a number. They usually sell for much less than problem-free coins.

How Much Does it Cost to Get a Coin Graded Professionally?
Grading fees depend on the coin’s type and value. Under NGC’s U.S. fee schedule effective January 20, 2026, the Modern tier (coins struck 1965 to date, worth up to $3,000) costs $20 per coin, and the Economy tier (non-gold coins struck before 1990 and worth up to $300) costs $25. The Standard tier (coins worth up to $3,000) costs $45, and Express (up to $10,000) costs $80. NGC also adds a $10 handling fee per submission, and you pay postage and insurance both ways. Fees change, so check NGC’s current services and fees before you submit.
